Things to Check to Make Sure You're Ready for the Cold

With the winter quickly approaching, it’s time to check on your heater to make sure it’s ready to keep you warm until spring. Here are some tips and steps you should take to make sure that your heater is ready to beat the winter.

1. Replace your filters

Having clean air filters is important for multiple reasons. Dirty, dusty air filters don’t heat appropriately, leaving your home uncomfortable. They can be bad for the well-being of the guests of your home or office. Depending on who you ask, you may hear that changing them anywhere from twice a year to once a month is appropriate. Although there is no exact time frame in which you should change them, it is responsible to check on them once a month to see if you need to change them.

2. Make sure your thermostat is functioning properly

As simple as it sounds, you should turn on your heat to make sure it works before the first freezing day of the year. Try putting it a few degrees warmer than room temperature. You should hear your heater turn on within a minute or so. If it doesn’t work as it should, don’t try to fix it unless you have a background in heating repair. It is safer to call a heating repair professional, such as Diligence Heating and Air LLC, in this scenario.

3. Check the spaces around your heating system

Since you probably haven't used your furnace since the conclusion of the previous winter, there's a chance you could've stored some items dangerously close to your furnace. Always make sure there are no flammable items near your furnace. While checking that, it's also important to make sure your vents are unblocked to allow proper air flow throughout your home.

4. Consider buying a new furnace if your current one is old

Depending on how long you’ve had your current furnace, it may be time to consider buying and installing a new heating system. If you've properly maintained your furnace throughout the entirety of its lifespan, then age might not matter too much. However, if you neglected it, chances are it can only give you 20 years of proper heating. If it seems like you’re calling a furnace repair company more than you should or that your heating bills continually rise, it may be time to consider purchasing a new furnace.

Whether you love or hate winter, sleeping in a cold home is something nobody should do. If you have a furnace that isn't working properly, it is vital to get it fixed as soon as possible. Call Diligence Heating and Air LLC today so you can be warm tonight!

There’s nothing worse than going to turn your air conditioning on during a hot day, and it won’t turn on. Of course, when it happens you’re going to go into panic mode thinking about how you won’t be able to cool your home, or even worse what it could cost you to get it fixed. There is no need to be concerned right away, knowing that there are a few reasons why it might not be turning on. It is not uncommon for this problem to happen, so there are some things you should look for first. A few of those are:

  • A Circuit Breaker Tripped - Circuit breakers were designed to shut off when it is receiving an electricity overload protecting your home from fires. This could be caused by a few different problems. You may be running too many appliances in your home at once, or an appliance is getting old and is consuming more electricity than it normally would. Check your breaker to see if it needs to be reset, and is the reason your air conditioning won’t turn on.
  • Clogged Air Filter - Air filters need to be changed regularly, but unfortunately it is something most people don’t prioritize. A clean air filter will allow for proper airflow through an air conditioner, but when it has been clogged with dirt and debris the air can no longer flow properly. It is important to check your air filters often to be sure they have not been clogged.
  • Your Motor Stopped Working - If you noticed that before your air conditioner wouldn’t turn on it was making noises, there is a good chance it may be your motor. If you find that the issue is the motor, you should look for a knowledgeable and experienced technician to help with the fix instead of replacing the whole unit.
  • Your Thermostat Needs To Be Replaced - Your thermostat is the control panel for your air conditioning unit. Without this, there is no way that it could turn on. If your thermostat needs batteries, is blank, or it is outdated it can cause the unit not to turn on.

Even the most maintained air conditioning units need to be repaired from time to time. Finding an air conditioning company you can trust is important when you start to run into problems.
